Over the upcoming weeks, we will introduce the Grindhouse 3 participants to the public. Samuel Mullur is a 24-year-old professional poker player from Austria. He’s playing for a living since 2020, but it isn’t the first that playing a game earned him some pocket money.
Describing his own path as ‘very different' from most people, Mullur surely took the interesting route when he was younger. Dropping out of middle school to start a marketing agency, to then finding love for poker.
He started middle school at the ‘gymnasium’ level, which takes 8 years. After these 8 years, you can start at university, but Mullur didn’t complete the full 8 years.
“I dropped out until the 7th year to go to evening school. I did that because I wanted to continue playing a lot of video games, and soccer, and I wanted to do something else. I mostly played competitive shooters. I even played for a little bit of money sometimes and it was a dream to become an esports athlete. I didn’t want to chase academics.
I came across digital marketing and met a guy in London that owned a marketing agency. I thought this would be a great starting point to do something else with my life.”
Mullur moved schools to work on the side through the day, and go to school in the evening. After about a year, close to graduation, Mullur landed his first client and suddenly had an income.
“I told my parents that I needed to quit school because I wanted to grow my business. If I tell it like this it sounds pretty easy actually, but it was very tough to convince my parents. After a couple of weeks, however, I landed another client and I ran the agency for roughly 2 years.”
Having a competitive mindset and playing a lot of video games and chess, another hobby of Mullur was football. When some of his friends invited him to play a tournament in the cantina of the local football club, it sounded like a good idea to the young Austrian.
“I didn’t see my friends for a long time so I thought it was a good idea to join. The tournament was like 20 euros. I heard about the game and I saw it on TV but I never played it before. I believe my parents even gave me a WSOP game for the WII but I never actually played that I think, haha! Right from the start, I was hooked on the game. I felt there were edges to gain and when I got home afterward and I immediately started reading everything I could find. I started studying right away.”
Now some years later, Mullur made a name for himself with consistent scores on the online felt, and some small scores playing live tournaments. His most recent success was chopping the mystery bounty tournament in Grand Casino Liechtenstein with Pokercode Stream Team member Jan ‘HansiWurst’ Wagner.
Mullur was the first grindhouse member announced publicly and the moment he heard the news it was a big surprise to him. When he was chilling with Quirin ‘Q_Poker’ Heinz, he suddenly received a phone call while Heinz was live streaming.
“It was super surprising. I was so excited and I felt incredibly grateful. For me, it’s been an awesome 1.5 years of meeting awesome people and I believe that when you meet good people, good things happen. At the moment I was just super grateful to be a part of something like that and I’m looking forward to the house!”
Unlike some other Grindhouse participants, Mullur will be surrounded by some familiar faces.
“I am already friends with Tobi and Fabian. For me personally, I’m really looking forward to having a great group of guys who are working together on the same goals. Trying to push each other. I’m also looking forward to all different kinds of coaching sessions, but I hope that the most I’m going to get out of Grindhouse is having a group of motivated people. They are going to be there after the Grindhouse as well!
Having a competitive spirit, and being at the top of the game is something that Mullur wants to chase.
“I just want to compete at a good level. Financially I don’t need to worry too much, but I would like to establish myself more in the higher stakes. My ABI is about $100 now but I want to achieve something like $250 or $300. I would love to play the higher stakes in a couple of years.”
As with many others, Mullur has a great base to become a successful high-stakes poker player. Currently, he does believe, however, that his study routines lack focus and structure. He’s hoping that he can learn more about structuring his study from other participants and of course the coaches, but studying isn’t the only thing he’s looking forward to.
“I can’t wait to play together in the house. I always play a lot of tables and play long sessions. I'm sure there will be plenty of deep runs by everyone in the house!”
