What are GTO poker solvers?
A Poker Solver is a software program that outlines the most optimal play in a given scenario. We as players need to input the scenario, the solver can then indicate what we action we should have taken and at what frequency.
As you would expect, Solvers have had a significant influence on how the poker landscape has changed since they became more widely available.
Pokercode founder & CEO Fedor Holz has been getting more involved with solvers in recent years and pulled together a video for the Pokercode Youtube channel outlining three key points around Poker Solvers.
Fedor likes to evaluate hands he has played as there is an emotional drive in understanding a hand we have played.
We are tied to the result, so it gives we an added attachment to running through the simulation.
We should have the hunger to know if we made any mistakes.
We're also able to re-evaluate the decisions we would make, before then looking to see how accurate it is as per the solver outputs.
"We all don't understand how much we suck at Poker" - Fedor Holz 2022
We all have expectations of how good we can get at Poker, but most of us set the bar too low.
Whenever we think we've played a hand fine, we really need think about it. We shouldn't be coming out of sessions thinking that every decision we made was correct.
There is always room for improvement. The EV difference from where we are to where we could be is massive.
For Fedor specifically, it was his small blind strategy where he's found the most value so far in using Poker Solvers. Fedor eludes to having played the small blind pretty poorly through the bulk of his career. Through the work he's put in, he's seen improvements but still feels it's a massive opportunity for improvement in his and most players' games.
Poker is not about grinding it out or doing things a certain way. We need to have fun and use learning styles that work for us as individuals.
We don't just want to learn a chart. We want to improve how we think. We want to get better problem solving, see patterns and challenge ourselves.
So it would help if you worked with solvers in a way that adds value to you. You can take some ideas from the video of things to explore, but you need to build a process you enjoy!
If it's fun for you, your study becomes an enjoyable facet of the game rather than a chore to improve your EV.
