The odds of getting dealt pocket aces in No-Limit Texas Hold’em is 1 in 221 or around 0.45%.
So your chances of it happening are pretty slim. Having it happen twice in a short session is a lot less likely. This wasn’t the case for Pokercode Cash Game Coach Stefen Sontheimer as he was dealt the hand dubbed ‘Pocket Rockets’ twice in quick succession at the $200 zoom tables on Pokerstars.
He decided to navigate the hands differently due to several factors, which we will explore in this article.
Our Hero finds himself 4-betting a 3-bet from the big blind pre with A❤️A♦️, Villain in the big blind finds the call, and we go heads up in position to the flop.
Pot $70.06 (35.12BB)
Flop 8❤️J♣️4♣️
Time to size down our c-bet, Steffen opts for around a 20% bet of $14.48 (7.24BB), Villain snap clicks it back to $28.96 (14.48BB).
No choice here but for us to jam. The Villain has a couple of hands he min clicks back like A♣️Kx, but more than likely he has a than like QQ, JJ, TT or some suited hands drawing to the flush.
We don’t expect to get any folds here, but Kings can kill our action if we call instead of getting it in. Villain calls us of with T❤️T♣️ and we hold to take down a $286.06 (143.03BB) pot.
This time our Hero finds himself in the small blind calling a 4-bet from the Villain on the Button.
Pot $86.24 (43.12BB)
Flop 8♠️8❤️7❤️
Steffen elects to lead here for 25% pot $21.56 (10.78BB), outlining this flop doesn’t hit the Villains 4-bet range. Villain quickly makes the call.
Pot $129.36 (64.68BB)
Turn 3 ♠️
Steffen points out that we now cover both nut flush draws, so we can continue betting small or start to have some checks with this information.
Steffen again elects to go for the 25% pot bet, $32.34 (16.17BB). Once again, Villain finds the call here.
Ptt $194.04 (97.02BB)
River 3♣️
There’s a choice to be made, and Steffen elects to lay the trap with a check. We’re looking here for the Villain to still value bet hands like Pocket Jacks which Steffen eludes some people aren’t quite capable of in this spot.
Villain jams the river, and Steffen snap calls.
