Hero

The term hero in poker is used when discussing hands to denote the person from whose perspective the analysis is being done. In other words, it is the player in the focus.

For example, when talking about a hand, you could say something like: “Hero opens from under the gun. The player on the button calls, and the big blind squeezes. The action is back on the Hero.”

While it may feel strange to refer to a poker player as a “hero,” this is actually a rather common term used when analyzing hands to distinguish the player who is the primary center of attention from other players involved in a hand.

Following the same logic, these other non-hero players are often referred to as villains, i.e., those trying to prevent the Hero from winning.
