High Card

A high card is the lowest ranking combination in poker that is made of five different cards that are not all of the same suit.

For example, As Qc 9d 6c 3h is a high card combination since it can’t form a better holding and does not even include a pair. This specific combination is usually referred to as an ace-high since thehighest card is an ace.

If multiple players have a high card hand, you need to compare the highest card in the combination to determine the winner. If the highest card is the same, then you compare the second card, and so on, until you determine the winner. For example, K 8 7 5 2 would win againstQ J T 8 5 because a king is higher than a queen. On the other hand, even though the first three cards are the same, Q J T 8 5 would win against Q J T 7 2because the 4th card in the combination is different, and eight is higher than seven.
