A maniac is a reckless and unpredictable poker player who adheres to an extremely loose-aggressive style, taking big risks and playing many big pots in any given session.
This is generally a losing approach, and most maniacs are losing players in the long run. However, this high-variance approach leads to these players sometimes having massive winning sessions that aren’t possible with a healthier and more moderate strategy.
Even though a poker maniac will usually lose in the long run, they can be extremely difficult to play against on any given day. They get involved with many pots, and once they’re in, they’ll keep betting and raising with good and bad hands alike, constantly putting you to the test.
It is advisable not to get into bluffing wars with maniacs and instead wait for good hands to trap them with. However, due to their wide ranges, you’ll need to stretch the definition of a strong hand a little bit and sometimes look them up with a top pair/top kicker type of a hand in a huge pot.
Be prepared for some big swings when playing against a maniac, but as long as you have good bankroll management and play in games you can afford, you should come out well ahead if you play them long enough.
