MTT

Multi-table tournaments, or MTTs, are poker events with many players who are randomly seated at multiple tables to compete until the winner is crowned.

For example, a multi-table tournament with189 participants will likely be divided into 21 tables with 9 players each. As players lose their chips and bust from the tournament, the table count is reduced until the final table is formed with nine players. Then the play continues until one of the players takes all the chips and wins the MTT.

As for the prizes, up to 20% of participating players will get paid as a rule of thumb, so in our example of189 players, the event can have around 36 paid places. This can change from one tournament to another, and some can have a 15% distribution, 10%, or even be a winner take all in the case of a satellite.

Unlike in cash games, you can’t stand up and leave the tournament, so playing at your a-game requires significantly more time and patience. Also, MTT players will encounter higher variance since you will be playing events with hundreds, if not thousands of players, so having a proper bankroll is essential.
