Overpair

In games with hole cards like Texas Hold’em and Omaha, an overpair is a pocket pair higher than any of the community cards.

For example, if you are dealt pocket queens (QQ) and the flop comes 5-7-9, you have an overpair to the board.

Holding an overpair on the flop doesn’t guarantee you’ll still have an overpair by the river. Using the above example, if the turn comes a K, you’ll no longer have an overpair.

Generally speaking, an overpair is a strong hand in Texas Hold’em, but it is still a single pair, and you need to be careful committing a lot of chips with this hand, paying attention to the board texture and how it coordinates with your opponent’s perceived range.
