Position

In games with blinds, like Texas Hold’em, position describes a player’s seat relative to the button. Since the button moves every hand, your position also changes constantly.

There are several main positions at a poker table: the small and the big blind, the early position, the middle position, the lojack, the highjack, the cutoff, and the button. The player in the first position (i.e., the first to act before the flop) is termed Under the Gun (UTG).

More broadly speaking, poker positions are grouped into four main categories:

• Early position (UTG and the two players to act after them)

• Middle position (after early positions up to the hijack)

• Late position (hijack, button, and cutoff).

• Blinds (i.e., the big blind and the small blind)

Position is a very important concept in poker, as it largely dictates one’s strategy. Depending on the position, players choose what hands to get involved with before the flop and how to proceed after it.
