A shootout tournament is a type of tournament where every table plays for itself down to the winner. Winners of each table progress to the next round, forming new tables, which once again play down to the winner.
This process continues until the final table, where the final nine (or six) players come together to play down to the event winner.
Shootout tournaments have different dynamics from traditional freezeouts, as they play more like a series of individual sit-and-goes. Every new table starts fresh, with all players having the same stack, so there is no element of trying to build one’s stack.
For example, an 810-player shootout would start with 90 tables of nine players. A winner from each table would advance to the next round, consisting of ten tables with nine players each. The final round would then probably start 10-handed, featuring ten winners, and the tournament would then play down to the end.
