Trips

Trips refer to a specific three-of-a-king hand made up of three cards of the same rank, one of which is the player's hole card, and the other two are community cards.

For example, if you are holding Qc Js and the flop comes Jc Jd 6s, you just made trip jacks since two jacks came on the flop, and you have one as your hole card.

While this is not the nuts, you can treat it as that and be happy to put all your chips in the middle. If you get unlucky and run into the cooler where your opponent has better trips or full house, let's be it, but more often than not, you will take down a nice pot.

This hand combination might look similar to a set, which is made when you have a pocket pair in the hole and then pair that with one of the community cards. That being said, trips are a bit less valuable since it is very obvious to your opponent that you might have a Jack in such a situation, while the set is much more disguised, usually letting you win bigger pots.
