Underdog

In poker, the underdog is a player whose hand is statistically less likely to win. This determination is based on poker hand odds calculations that can tell you what hand is the favorite and what hand is the underdog at any time, from preflop to the river.

For example, if you have pocket kings against pocket aces before the flop, you’re a big underdog, as you’ll win only about 20% of the time.

On the flop, if you have the top two pairs against the bottom set, you’re also a big underdog despite your hand being strong in relative terms. In fact, you’ll win in this spot only about 17% of the time.

When an underdog manages to win the hand, this is what poker players usually refer to as a suck-out or a bad beat.
