VPIP

VPIP stands for Voluntarily Put Money in the Pot, and it is one of the essential poker stats that tell you how often a player has put money into the pot when they didn’t have to (i.e., they weren’t in the blinds).

This poker stat, which you will find in any HUD out there, accounts for all actions with which the player puts money into the pot, be it a call, a raise, a 3-bet, etc.

A high VPIP over a big sample usually indicates a player who plays too many hands, and this is rarely a winning strategy.

As for the formula used to calculate one’s VPIP, it’s pretty simple: the number of times a player puts money into the pot / the number of hands. So, a player voluntarily playing 45 hands throughout 100 hands has a VPIP of 45%.
