The Ace is the highest ranking card in most poker games, typically valued above King. It's unique in its ability to act as both the highest card (for straights like A-K-Q-J-10) and the lowest card (for "wheel" straights like 5-4-3-2-A). Aces are crucial in forming strong hands like pocket pairs, top pairs, and the best possible straight, known as the "Broadway" straight.
