Upswing

In poker, the term upswing describes a prolonged period of sustained winnings that are above the player’s expected win rate or ROI. It is the exact opposite of the downswing.

For example, you can hear this term in a sentence like: “John went on a huge upswing last month. He’s up over 50 buy-ins in just five sessions.”

Upswings, just like downswings, are a standard part of poker. Over the long haul, every player will experience some upswings, during which it may feel like you can’t lose. It is important, however, to realize that this is all part of normal variance and that huge, mathematically impossible win rates aren’t sustainable in the long run.
